Herbal Remedy Kit from Learning Herbs

Sunday, August 7, 2016

One of Zoey's current interests this spring and summer has been herbs. She's really into learning how to identify different plants, especially herbal plants and learning how to use them, how to harvest them, when, etc. I am not confident in this area but am trying my best to keep up and provide her with books, websites, and more to help her navigate this passion safely. In my search online I discovered the website for Learning Herbs and saw that they had a kit that you could purchase that essentially provided you with all the supplies needed to make your own medicinal salves, tinctures, syrups and more. I thought this might be a good "first" project for Zoey and I do tackle together.

This is what we got in the kit:

It was pretty exciting to open up the package and dig around and discover all that was provided. Zoey of course wanted to start right in on the creating part of the project. A DVD is provided with instruction for each item as well as a printed pamphlet. We watched the first segment on creating the echinacea tincture and since that seemed easy enough, we started with that.

They provide you with all the herbs needed, and we dumped them into a jar along with some vodka (funny story here...we don't usually have hard liqueur on hand in the house so a little old lady friend of mine actually gave me a jar of 6 ounces of vodka for our little project!), shook it up and now we will wait.

Six weeks to be exact. We make sure to shake it up a bit once a day to make sure the herbs remain covered.

After our six weeks are up we will drain and squeeze the infused alcohol into little dropper jars for our tincture. Kind of a fun (and easy!) first project and it will hopefully help keep us healthy this cold and flu season and also will serve as a good topical first-aid as well. We will be sure to update with more pictures of our finished product!
